Opening Line

The bedroom I love most was in the apartment I most disliked.

Cool plaster walls painted gray, hardwood floors with a rich, honeyed patina and white diaphanous sheers at the four six over six, three quarter of the wall height windows.  I think they may have been original to the house.

Boy, I hated that apartment. I hated it with a passion that comes from having made a bad, impulsive choice because I wanted out of cookie cutter apartment complexes and knowing it would be 12 months before I could rectify the situation.  I disliked the aging landlord's son who promised but never delivered.  The kitchen could only be described as character building.  I do recall making shrimp stew over steamed rice there - a testament more to willpower than anything.

But I loved that cool, serene room.

Yet today, in a home I love, there is no room with gray walls.  The hardwood floor - check. The plaster walls - check.  But no gray paint.

Wonder why?

  1. Sounds like you've got a trip to the paint store in your future!
I've been wondering about you. Hope all is well.

P.S. Beautifully written. Not often you get to use diaphanous! It's a fun word, isn't?

  2. I understand completely what you mean...there are things that I adore about this house I've owned for 10 years and things that I wonder what in the world I may have possibly been thinking. Paint is something you can rectify. Unless, of course, paint is your kryptonite as it is mine. Cool gray walls sound yummy. I'm repainting my bedroom and Jill's ex-room...and I'm thinking something gray now. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

  3. WOULD THAT BE THE APARTMENT WHEN YOU HAD DUTCH THE RABBIT?

IN YOUR FIRST HOUSE YOU HAD THE ROOM PAINTED PALE BLUISH-GRAY WITH THE STENCILS AROUND THE WALLS NEAR THE CEILING. LOVED THAT ONE.
